The Canadian Society was founded in 1920. One of the founding members was Walter J. MacDonald, CA, Senior Partner of Millar, McDonald, Chartered Accountants in Winnipeg. The Society of Industrial and Cost Accountants of Manitoba was created by private Bill and received Royal Assent on April 26, 1947.

A group of influential persons in business and public practice work took an active role in seeking incorporation of our Society. Besides Walter J. MacDonald, CA, were Daniel Sprague, CA, Senior Partner of Laird, Sprague & Co., Jack H. Smith, Controller, Hudson’s Bay Co., William Dunbar, CA, Controller, MacDonald Bros. Aircraft Co. Ltd., Thomas B. Milne, Controller, Great West Life Assurance Co. and D.C. Hudson, Dominion Bridge, Inc.

On August 19, 1983, Bill #38 received Royal Assent. This allowed our Manitoba members the exclusive right to use Certified Management Accountant (CMA) after their name. This Bill and Act served CMA Manitoba until December 1, 2004 when its new Act received Royal Assent.
